Nigerian Michael Ikenna Nduanya to be executed by firing squad in Vietnam

Michael Ikenna Nduanya, the Nigerian man who was committed to death penalty in Vietnam two weeks back could be eliminated this week through firing squad, according to mounting rumors in the country. If his execution is delayed, then he could be dying through lethal injection as the law will be changing from this July when public execution by firing squad would be ditched for a more dignifying death by lethal injection.

As news of his sentence broke out last week, Nigerians across the world have called on the Nigerian Federal government to make concerted effort to negotiate his life with the communist government of Vietnam.

He has been described as one of the victims of Nigeria government’s neglect with millions of youths in the nation wasting away due to unemployment, and thousands more on self-seeking enslavement across the world looking for life lines have met their untimely death.

Hundreds of Nigerian youths are dying every year through many disgraceful means in desperation to escape to other countries of the world for more dignified life.

Michael’s life could be wasted within weeks unless the Nigerian government intervenes to show its disgust over the sentence, claimed by many to have been racially motivated.

Sources in Nigeria had claimed that Michael is an orphan and had made the desperate bid in search of a better life abroad. Hardship and lack of hope had driven him to petty drug trading.

Michael was sentenced to death in Vietnam for transporting a small quantity of heroin last week. His Vietnamese wife was also sentences to life imprisonment, raising questions of racism and dislike for foreigners the so called substance claimed to be heroin was caught with the wife who was saaid to be acting on her husband’s behalf.

According to a court official last Wednesday, Michael and his common-law spouse Nguyen Thi Hai Anh, 27, were convicted on Tuesday in Ho Chi Minh City by an Ho Chi Minh City People’s Court.
He was sentenced to death on March 22 for illegal transportation of hard drugs.
The couple were arrested in December 2009.

Bomb Explosion Rocked INEC's office in Suleja, Niger state killing 25 people

A  bomb explosion  rocked INEC's office in Suleja, Niger state killing 25 people. 8 of these people are reportedly Youth corpers. The dead corps members were part of those who had arrived in time to receive their material allocation and possibly pass the night there to enable them set out early today to their polling booths.
INEC released this statemen
Statement By Hon. Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec) On The Explosion In Suleija, Niger State

It is with heavy heart and sorrow that we received the news this evening of an explosion that occurred at the INEC LGA office in Suleija, Niger State. The unfortunate incident occurred when the Commission was deploying personnel and materials in preparation for tomorrow’s National Assembly elections. We
condemn this cowardly and dastardly action, which seems designed to instill fear in Nigerians and paralyze their aspirations for peaceful and credible elections.
Reports reaching the Commission indicate that there have been fatalities and injuries involving both regular and ad-hoc staff on national service. Investigations are still ongoing.
Our deep sympathies go to the families of all these young Nigerians who lost their lives or were injured. They have made enormous sacrifices in the service of their fatherland, and May God Almighty reward them appropriately.
Similarly, the Commission commiserates with the Director General, Management and all members of the National Youth Service Corps Scheme over this tragic incident.
All Nigerians must remain resolved not to allow the perpetrators of this dastardly act to achieve their aim of scuttling the aspiration of Nigerians for free, fair, peaceful and credible elections.
We are working closely with the security agencies to ensure that all those behind this mindless incident are tracked down and brought to justice very soon.
Thank you.
Prof. Attahiru M. Jega, OFR.

May their souls R.I.P and may God give their families the fortitude to bear this 'avoidable'  loss.

Why I didn’t ask Jega to resign, by Jonathan

THERE is bad news for those pushing for Prof. Attahiru Jega’s resignation.

The President said yesterday that he was “in full support” of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman, who came under attack for calling off last Saturday’s National Assembly elections.

The President spoke at a photo exhibition on his campaign tour at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja.

“The day I no longer support him, I will of course raise the process of removing him. You know that of course, if he is no longer performing well, I will communicate to the National Assembly to terminate his appointment. Until I do that, I am fully in his support and I know that he will do well,’’ the President said.

Jonathan said: “The country and the electoral body are totally committed to ensuring that they conduct credible elections’’.

He said INEC had the alternative of going ahead with the polls last week without the result sheets to enter the results at the collation centres, but it declined.

Said Dr. Jonathan: “What arrived late were the results sheets. They could not have been distributed that night to everybody. That would have meant taking the materials to the collation centres where they would have entered the results on plain sheets of paper. This is what we are against, that is what INEC is against.

Text Message Battle rages in Lagos ahead of the National Assembly Elections

Funny enough, I just got one.

It’s no more the battle of posters. No more the battle of jingles on radio. It’s now the battle of the GSM. With barely 72 hours to the National Assembly election, politicians in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, have embarked on a last ditch effort to woo voters through electronic text messages.
The unsolicited text messages have flooded phones used by subscribers of major telecom service providers such as Globacom, MTN, Airtel and Etisalat.
One of such messages sent by the Labour Party, LP, reads: “6.1 million Lagosians will vote to end Tinubu’s oppression. Vote Labour.” One of the candidates of Labour Party in Lagos State is Dapo Durosimi-Etti. He is gunning for the Lagos Central Senatorial District, comprising Apapa, Eti Osa, Victoria Island, Lagos Mainland and Surulere.
Incidentally, that is the senatorial district Oluremi Tinubu is also vying for as candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN.

Visafone Acquires Multilinks Telecom

Visafone, Africa’s largest CDMA mobile operator, has further strengthened its market position by acquiring Multi-links Communications Limited’s CDMA mobile assets.

Visafone is paying $52 million for the acquisition, which moves its subscriber base up to 4.2 million. Multi-links is arguably the oldest mobile phone company in Nigeria, having been in the market for over 15 years. The combined entity of Visafone and Multi-links creates a total active subscriber base of 4.2 million, which cuts across 90 percent of Nigeria’s land mass.

At a signing ceremony in Johannesburg, South Africa, at the weekend, Jim Ovia, chairman of Visafone, said: “Visafone recognises that this deal will solidify its position in the Nigerian marketplace and is committed to offering world-class voice and data solutions to existing Multilinks customers.  This transaction brings us closer to achieving our target of 10 million subscribers within three years.

“We believe that the superior technology offered by CDMA, combined with a subscriber base of 4.2 million active subscribers will enable Visafone to continue as a game-changing innovator in the Nigerian marketplace. Multilinks customers will be afforded the same high quality of network and customer service as existing Visafone subscribers enjoy.”

These men robbed, Raped 3 sisters - They then forced an axe into their victims’ private parts

Ogba and Adibe
For three sisters in Bariga area of Lagos, January 14, 2011 would remain a terrible date in their minds till they breathe their last. On the fateful day, three armed young men allegedly invaded their home, causing unmitigated misery and sorrow. The men reportedly robbed the three ladies of cash and other valuables. They then took turns to rape their victims.
That wasn’t all. The men then abused and humiliated the sisters by using the handle of their axe to ravage their private parts.
One of the ladies, who was pregnant at the time, allegedly lost her pregnancy. And by the time the monsters in human skin left, the entire room was like a slaughter house with small pools of blood everywhere.

The incident happened at Lawal Street, Bariga.

Nemesis has, however, caught up with two of the suspected robbers. Amaechi Ogba and Ikenna Adibe, both 25, have been arrested in connection with the incident and are both telling the police what they know about the dastardly act. Ugo Nweze, the third suspect, is still on the run. The robbers were said to have climbed the fence around 2.30 am, broke the door with an axe and forced their way into the room. They robbed the three girls of money and other valuables and later gang-raped them.
One of the ladies, who was two months pregnant at the time, lost her baby in the process. She, like the others, almost bled to death.
Among the items stolen from the ladies was a Blackberry, which was allegedly sold to one Isa Muhammed for N13, 000. Ironically, it was through the phone that the men of the State Anti -Robbery Squad (SARS), Ikeja traced and arrested the buyer. Muhammed subsequently took the detectives to the two suspects. On March 6, Adibe and Ogba were arrested. They have since been cooling their heels in police custody.
The victims have also identified both suspects as among the trio that robbed and raped them.
Adibe, in a chat, told our reporter that his gang members and their victims were all neighbours in the Ilaje area of Bariga, admitting that they had robbed the area on two occasions.
He said after forcing their way into the victims’ room, they robbed and raped the ladies.
“They cooperated with us and we collected their wedding rings, their money and their ATM cards. We later raped them.
We raped the three girls in their rooms and we later inserted the handle of the axe in their private parts. One of them even begged us that she was pregnant, but we didn’t budge.” Adibe, who said he hails from Ebonyi State, said one of the victims attended the same secondary school with him in Bariga. He said they spent only one hour in the house of their victims. The other suspect, Ogba, said they used clothes to cover the victims’ faces so that they would not be identified.
“Immediately we took the ATM card, I quickly went to a bank and withdrew N5, 000. Ugo Nweze, who is now at large, was the one who said we should not pity our victims. Immediately we were arrested, the victims were able to identify us because we were all neighbours. We are pleading that we should be forgiven. It was the devil that used us,” he pleaded.
Officer-in-charge of SARS, Mr. Abba Kyari, a superintendent of police (SP), said it was the information on the Blackberry that served as a guide for the policemen. Through the information, the detectives swung into action and arrested the receiver and eventually, the suspects, he said.
Abba said the two suspects had confessed that they had been terrorising the Bariga area of Lagos for some time.
One of the victims, who wouldn’t want her name mentioned, said the experience was bitter and pathetic.
Her words: “We never knew such an incident could happen in our area. We were suddenly woken up in the night and we saw people jumping in through the fence. They broke our door and forcefully entered our room. They demanded for money and we gave them what we had. They demanded for our ATM cards and we gave them. They demanded for our wedding rings, we also gave them. When they demanded for sex, we pleaded with them, using the name of Jesus Christ.
They refused and raped the three of us. As if that was not enough, they started using the handle of the axe with which they broke our door to penetrate our private parts. They didn’t stop until they saw blood coming out.” The lady said they went to the Bariga Police Station to report the ugly incident and later went to the hospital to have themselves examined. “A doctor said we had contacted some Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) and we were treated.
One of the policemen later informed us that they had arrested the suspects and when we got to the police custody we realized that the two suspects were our neighbours. They also confessed and begged us to forgive them for the evil they did to us.” Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Yakubu Alkali, said he was baffled with the acts of the robbers, who not only rob their victims, but also raped them. He said the young men had confessed to their sin. Alkali also said the police recovered an axe and a cutlass used during the operation from the suspects.
When our reporter visited the scene of the robbery, fear was still written on the faces of many people. A resident, Mr. Akin Agbaje, said they had been living in fear of armed robbers since last year. He said many people have fallen victims in the area and appealed to the police to be more vigilant even as he commended them for apprehending the suspects.
According to Alkali, the suspects would be arraigned in court as soon as investigations are concluded.
